Abstract
Benedetto di Virgilio’s epic poem Il Saverio (1650) is one of the few Italian epic poems of its time dedicated to a post-Tridentine saint. It narrates the exploits of the Jesuit Saint Francis Xavier during his missions to Southeast Asia and Japan. The following chapter examines the role of miracles in the conversion of the non-Christian peoples that Saint Xavier encountered during his journeys. Miracles serve as rhetorical instruments that manifest the saint’s connection to God and elucidate the tenets of Christian truth. Furthermore, the miracles performed by Saint Xavier evoked wonder and astonishment among those who witnessed them. The retelling of the saint’s exploits in the poem echoes this effect among readers. Thus, Di Virgilio combines the aesthetic delight demanded by contemporary poetics with the instructional elements of Roman Catholic doctrine.
