Abstract

The nanbangaku or nanban bunka, which is the set of doctrines of the "barbarians of the South", did not know its epilogue with the proscription of Christianity or with the expulsion of the Iberian merchants. In this article I try to show how both the Dutch company, which moved to Deshima (1641), and the Chinese community of Nagasaki, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, became channels of this phenomenon. The circulation of information on Portugal and Portuguese culture was trasmitted, although in small doses, in Seiy? Kibun (1715), written by Neo-Confucian scholar Arai Hakuseki, based on the four colloquies he had with the Sicilian missionary Giovan Battista Sidotti, who arrived clandestinely in Yakushima in 1708.O nanbangaku ou nanban bunka, ou seja, o conjunto das doutrinas dos “bárbaros do sul”, não conheceu o seu epílogo com a proscrição do cristianismo, nem com o afastamento dos comerciantes ibéricos.
