Abstract
On the occasion of the bicentenary of the death of Francisco Xavier Balmis, his pioneering project of the Royal Vaccine Expedition is described. This project, which was implemented with the support of the Spanish Crown, took the smallpox vaccine to America and the Philippines between 1803 and 1810
