Abstract

This study examines new data that complements the previous research results of Western academia on the development of tea culture in East Asia and the history of tea culture exchanges in East and West. This corresponds to the early records related to tea culture in East Asia, which were exposed to the eyes of Christian missionaries in the West in the process of East-West exchange. To this end, the contents recorded in Luis Frois, S, J's History of Japan have important significance. In order to establish the status of the data in the context of East-West tea culture exchange history, it is necessary to three-dimensionally refer to the previous major research perspectives on the study of East-West tea culture exchange in the West, the history of Japanese tea culture research in the West, and the history of Zen Tea. On the basis of such previous studies, the records related to tea culture mentioned in Luis Frois, S, J's History of Japan were interpreted by considering their characteristics in the context of tea culture development history. This study primarily expands the research results on the development of Japanese tea culture in Korea. Focusing on the evaluation of the hisstory of tea culture development in Japan centering on the spirit of the tea culture in the West and at the same time, from the initial aspects of the tea culture exchange between the East and the West, the practical aspects of the Japanese tea culture within the other power groups were confirmed. Academic work to interpret the initial aspects of the history of East-West tea culture exchange makes a new history of tea culture and East-West culture exchange in East Asia.
