Abstract
The Sûden’s Anti‑Christian Edict (1614) is one of the most famous Japanese historical texts. This important text is generally presented by historians as marking a watershed in Japanese history: it appears as the starting point for the anti‑Christian policy of the Tokugawa shôgun (1603‑1867). This entry deals with the contents of this text and the context within which it was written and offers a new hypothesis as to the reason why it was promulgated at the beginning of 1614 at the behest of Tokugawa Ieyasu. This entry also includes a complete English and French translation of Sûden’s edict.
