Abstract
Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616) was the founder of the Tokugawa dynasty that stood at the apex of a military government or bakufu ruling Japan from 1600 until 1868. The system Ieyasu put in place thus survived more than two and a half centuries. Only in foreign policy was he unsuccessful in determining the future of Japan.
