Abstract
Abstract This chapter examines intercultural diplomacy between Momoyama Japan and the Spanish Philippines during the 1590s. The many instances of exchange between Momoyama Japan and the Spanish Philippines in the 1590s did not necessarily imply that their diplomatic relations were of a friendly nature. What seemed to be an act of friendship could actually be interpreted as an underlying act of subjugation, persuasion, or intimidation. In retrospect, uncertainties such as these determined the diplomatic practices between Japan and the Philippines during the last decade of the sixteenth century. This chapter considers questions of binary diplomatic systems by revisiting foreign relations of the 1590s from the point of view of intercultural diplomacy, focusing on the case of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his claim for Japanese sovereignty. It also discusses the diplomatic exchange between Japan and the Philippines during the period 1591–1598 and concludes with an analysis of Hispano-Japanese diplomatic correspondence against the background of communication issues and altering practices.
